Jogging reduces the risk of osteoarthritis sedentary people are at greater risk

  • The study found that “people with sedentary behavior” are at higher risk of “knee osteoarthritis” than those who jog, but marathoners and professional runners are at the highest risk.
  • The tendency of sedentary behavior in Thai people has been increasing continuously in the past 10 years. Not only knee osteoarthritis, but also increased risk of various diseases from not moving the body.
  • Thailand should accelerate the promotion of “Physical Activity” as a national agenda and create cooperation to reduce the gap in implementation for equality.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kulphat Chulsamlee, a hip and knee specialist at Prince Suvarnabhumi Hospital, gave information to Krungthep Turakij that there was a report of a study following 3 groups of people: a group of people who were sedentary and did not run at all, a group who ran at a general exercise level, and a group of professional runners, athletes, until old age, to see what percentage of people had  osteoarthritis  . It was found that

  • The group that runs for general exercise or jogs, running no more than 96 kilometers per week will encounter the least at only 3-4%.
  • The group that runs professionally over 90 kilometers per week has the highest risk at 13-14%.
  • But the group that doesn’t run at all or those who are sedentary will have a 7-8% risk of knee osteoarthritis, which is higher than the group that runs for general exercise.

“ People who are sedentary have significantly lower muscle, bone, tendon, and bone mass strength than those.

Who regularly set aside time to exercise. This is because the bone structure is strong and requires a force called biomechanics in the bones and joints. People who are sedentary are at risk of easy injuries, muscle and tendon inflammation, and being overweight can cause joint injuries,” said Asst. Prof. Dr. Kulpatchara.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kulpatchar also said that people who have osteoarthritis but not too much are advised to exercise, walk, walk fast or jog, which will make the joints more stiff. As for the treatment of osteoarthritis, it depends on the condition of the disease. If it is very little or medium, the focus will be on taking care of yourself, adjusting your behavior, reducing activities that make your knees worse, using medication, strengthening your knees, etc. And the most is having deformed knees, crooked knees, bending, not being able to fully extend, bending the knees a little, having a lot of abnormalities in the knee joint structure, which requires treatment with surgery.

“Physical activity” should be a national priority

While Dr. Pairoj Saonuam, Deputy Manager of the Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), said that the physical activity of Thai people is still fluctuating. Including the challenge of reaching health goals in all age groups. Children, youth and the elderly ทางเข้า ufabet are groups of people with low physical activity and need special support.
