Food preparation for diabetic patients is actually not a special type of food that is different from what normal people eat. But it depends on controlling the amount in each meal appropriately, including being careful and careful in choosing food. You have to consider the amount of sugar, flour and taste that should not be too sweet, especially fat which is important to control blood sugar levels, blood fat and body weight to be in the normal range.

Foods that can be eating but should be limited in quantity

Flour and flour products: rice, bread, taro, sweet potato, noodles, vermicelli. This group of foods will be absorbed by the body to use as energy. If it exceeds the body’s needs, it will automatically change the energy from sugar to fat. The proportion of food suitable for diabetic patients is 1 part flour, such as 1 ladle of rice.

It is recommended to avoid animal fat and switch to consuming good fats instead, such as rice bran oil, olive oil, avocado, approximately 1 portion/day, such as 1 tablespoon of oil.

Breakfast  

  • Spinach, egg and cheese sandwich, 1 small cantaloupe, black coffee or coffee with low-fat milk + 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 slice whole wheat bread, 1 fried or boiled egg, 1 plate of salad, black coffee or coffee with low-fat milk + 1 teaspoon sugar

Brunch snack

  • 1 small plate of not-too-sweet fruits such as guava , cantaloupe , apple , rose apple , or 1 banana, 3-4 strawberries.
  • 1 glass of instant drink or 1 glass of skim milk/low-fat milk.
  • Low – fat plain yogurt , 3-4 strawberries.

Lunch

  • dry soup , 1 small plate ( 1 cup) of not-too-sweet fruit 
  • 1 plate of Thai papaya salad , 1 piece of skinless grilled chicken , 1 small plate of sticky rice ( 1/2 cup)
  • 1 plate of fried rice , 1 plate of salad

Afternoon snack

  • 3-4 whole wheat crackers, 1 glass of unsweetened vegetable/fruit juice
  • 3 steamed dumplings or 1 steamed bun, 1 cup of hot chrysanthemum tea/unsweetened hot tea.
  • 1 glass of food substitute drink, 4-5 strawberries.

Dinner

  • 1 plate of grilled lean fish or chicken steak, clear vegetable salad or boiled vegetables

In each meal, diabetic patients should eat all 5 food groups to get complete nutrition, receive enough nutrients and energy, but not more than the body needs.
